Wednesday 1:57 PM Alcatel-Lucent (ALU +4.7%), down ~40% since February, outperforms with the help of bullish commentary regarding its 7950 XRS core router line, launched yesterday. Deutsche thinks the products offer "meaningful improvements" over rival offerings, and could take 5%-10% of the U.S. core router market simply by leveraging Alcatel's mobile carrier relationships. Goldman thinks the hardware could cause some headaches for Juniper (JNPR -4.8%). (previous)

Wednesday 9:05 AM Premarket gainers: RCON +70%. PCX +8%. ALU +5%. NBG +5%.
Losers: DELL -14%. TSL -6%. BIG -6%. [On the Move] - Tuesday 12:46 PM Alcatel-Lucent (ALU +0.7%) has released its 7950 XRS line, its first products for a lucrative core router market currently dominated by Cisco (CSCO) and Juniper (JNPR). The 7950 line offers very high densities and runs on Alcatel's hyped FP3 network processor, which can handle 400 Gbps transmission speeds. Carrier inertia and comfort with Cisco and Juniper's software will be major challenges for Alcatel, but Nomura is optimistic the company can carve a niche. [Tech]

A 30%+ drop in EMEA sales overshadowed a small drop in North American sales. The firm is particularly worried about the fact EMEA sales of WDM gear fell more than sales of legacy gear. "This is not the behavior of a region experiencing only a minor quarterly pullback," it observes. Some key industry players: CIEN, INFN, ALU, SCMR, TLAB, ADTN. [Tech]
